Make-up interview: “Evolution meets revolution”

Make-up interview: “Evolution meets revolution”

Derek Grillo, Make-up Manager at REVIDERM, and Simone Klingenstein, Head of Product Management, the creators behind the new REVIDERM cosmetics, talk about the unseen benefits of innovative color products.

“Simone is the heart and brain, and I am the heart and the hand,” says Derek Grillo about working with Simone Klingenstein. As a make-up artist with many years of international experience, he is a visionary and a guide, while she, as an experienced product manager, is “the brilliant mastermind pulling the strings.”

What inspired you to refresh REVIDERM’s make-up line?

Simone Klingenstein: Since the launch of our make-up line in 2014, technological possibilities have continuously evolved. A relaunch was necessary to meet REVIDERM’s high-quality standards.

Derek Grillo: You could compare it to the iPhone 6, which also came out in 2014. Back then, it was unbeatable, but today it’s far from the best option. The new color products are, in a way, the iPhone 16 in your make-up bag. Their formulas are forward-thinking, the application is intuitive, and the performance is top-tier. The quality is on a level I’ve encountered only a few times in my long professional career, and usually only in handpicked, exclusive flagship stores worldwide.

What new technologies are being used?

Derek Grillo: Today, pigments can be micro-granulated with more precision and encapsulated biomimetically. This means they mimic the skin’s own ceramides, which improves tolerance and enhances both wear time and natural finish. It also allows the creation of ultra-creamy textures that can incorporate high-performance ingredients. A great example is the new Sunkissed Velvet Bronzer — it feels powdery and smooth, but inside, it’s a fantastic hybrid formula.

Simone Klingenstein: Another example is our new Velvet Illusion Lipsticks, based on elastomer technology. They contain no wax or oil and offer a completely new range of textures and finishes. They’re not matte, not satin — coverage can be personalized.

How would you describe the benefits of the new products? What can users expect?

Derek Grillo: First and foremost, top-level performance with full personalization! And the ease of use — I could talk about that for hours. These products make beauty effortless. Take the new eyeshadows, for example. They’re almost self-setting and maintain a beautiful, long-lasting finish no matter how often you reapply with a brush.

Simone Klingenstein: For REVIDERM, it’s just as important that our make-up works in harmony with our skincare line. These color products are formulated to never interfere with skincare results. They’re safe for all skin types.

Which products are your personal favorites?

Simone Klingenstein: My favorite is the Secret Serum Concealer. I fell in love with the texture the first time I tried it. It provides excellent coverage yet looks invisible on the skin. What amazes me most is that it doesn’t settle into any fine lines around the eyes. I’ve worked in the beauty industry for years, and I’ve long searched for a concealer like this.

Derek Grillo: I love the new Perfecting Pigment Drops! They’re my "enfant chéri" — an idea I really wanted to bring to life. The featherlight, fluid texture can be added to any skincare product — cream, fluid, even sunscreen — without affecting its benefits. One drop gives your day cream a hint of color; a few drops turn it into full-coverage foundation. I’ve even used it with an airbrush — the effect was stunning. The skin looked like a retouched photo, live. I’m thrilled and hope many users feel the same.

Are there any products that haven’t changed?

Simone Klingenstein: We want to work only with the best and most convincing quality. But innovation for the sake of novelty is not REVIDERM’s style. Many products, like the Secret Serum Foundation or Mineral Lacquer Gloss, continue to delight both our customers and ourselves. They’ve either stayed the same or been slightly optimized.

Derek Grillo: REVIDERM stands for modernity, cutting-edge textures, and dynamic product development that evolves with the times — but only when it truly makes sense. The new make-up collection is a combination of evolution and revolution.

What exactly does personalization mean?

Derek Grillo: The new eyeshadows are a great example of how flexible color can be. When applied with a soft brush, you get a sheer finish. A firmer brush or a fingertip gives intense coverage — almost like an ink. I’ve never seen such “dynamic range” in a product.

Simone Klingenstein: Personalization also starts with the packaging. Eyeshadows, highlighters, and more can be purchased as individual shades and combined in a compact mirror — our new Smart Beauty Compact — tailored to your personal needs. Its magnetic base holds everything securely, making it your perfect handbag companion.
